After two weeks of exercise I started a sticker chart. I just called the start of the sticker chart week 1 since the stuff I did up until then didn’t really count as a workout. Like a little kid, it makes me happy to put a sticker on my chart. My exercise goals are to go to the gym 5 or 6 times a week. I alternate cardio (recumbent bike) and weights every other day. If I get well enough where I can do them in the same day, I’ll only need to go to the gym 3 days a week, but for an hour or so. Right now, that is just a distant dream. As you might remember week one of the exercise plan was pretty rough on me. This is reflected in weeks 2-4 where I was unable to get to the gym enough. However, for the last 3 weeks, I have gotten to the gym 5 times a week every week. Yay! It is becoming more of a routine, so the perfectionist in me finds it very hard to skip. It also is getting a tiny bit easier. It isn’t a major difference from when I started, but even a small difference is a good sign.
Yesterday, I almost didn’t go to the gym because E gave me her cold. Having a cold is one of my least favorite things in the world; I’d rather be throwing up. Still, before I had POTS, it is nothing I missed school or work over. Now, having a cold is completely different. As it is, I struggle to get through each day. Throw ANOTHER illness on top of what I already have, and it is so very hard to get myself out of bed for long. I have my POTS headache, and a sinus headache. I have my POTS eye pain that I get at the end of the day, and eye pain from sinus pressure. I have a POTS sore throat, and the sore throat that comes with a cold. I have POTS fatigue and cold fatigue. … you get the point…
I forced myself to go to the gym by thinking about how happy I was about having gotten to the gym 5 times for the last 2 weeks and how I didn’t want to ruin that for this week. It was pretty difficult and I wasn’t able to handle as much weight or as many reps as I normally do. I needed to sit and rest a lot before getting up and moving on to the next machine. Still, I went! I’m happy I did, because had I pushed it off until today, I wouldn’t have gone. Emma being here usually makes me sick (although I love her being here!), so POTS + cold + Emma = definitely not going to make it to the gym.
I hope to make it to the gym 5 times a week for the next 4 weeks, and then I may try to up my goal to 6 times a week. Going to the gym isn’t fun right now, but seeing my beautiful sticker chart and knowing I’m working hard to get better is :).
